SOUTH SOMERSET PEACE GROUP NEWSLETTER, JULY 2010
TUESDAY 27TH JULY MEETING
A panel of Peace Group members will discuss 'The Ethics of Aid : Peace and Conflict' ; we are expecting ActionAid to be represented, and the ground we want to cover will be broadly :
- the purpose and integrity of Aid
- the role played by Aid
- whether Aid can be designed and delivered to be conducive to peace rather than conflict (7.30pm in the Minster Rooms, Ilminster ; all welcome - entry £2, including tea/coffee)
TUESDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER MEETING
Kapil Komireddi, an Indian freelance writer who writes principally on foreign affairs, will talk about terrorism and related conflicts on the sub-continent
TUESDAY 29th JUNE MEETING
Naomi Wayne of the British Shalom-Salaam Trust gave us a vivid, absorbing and moving talk on her experiences in Israel and Palestine and her perspectives on them see http://www.bsst.org.uk for the British Shalom-Salaam Trust, which supports small projects in the health, education and cultural fields, including work with women, inter-communal work and peace activities
WORKSHOP ON CONFLICT AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
This workshop is still planned for Saturday 4th September at the Glade Centre in Ilminster ; the cost would be £45 per head if at least 7 people attend, so please email lynn@glade.org if you are interested
Friends Meeting House (Quakers), 95 South Street, Bridport DT6 3NZ Saturday 18th September 7.30pm Discussion: The Corner House. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk “The Corner House have been getting lots of attention for partnering CAAT in bringing BAE to court over charges of corruption. This event will be more of a led discussion, a question and answer session, revolving round the issues of the time. These are clever people who can discuss a great many of our concerns with great authority. I rather hope a major item will be about how to pressure the coalition government to keep at least one prison open, in case we can ever track down the fugitives Blair, Brown and Cameron and bring them to justice over the Iraq War.”
BRIDGWATER PEACE GROUP

HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL
“Thanks to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, these weapons will be illegal under international law from 1st August 2010. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to get all countries to join the Convention and make sure that they live up to their obligations.”
SSPG supports Handicap International www.handicap-international.org.uk as our way of demonstrating our commitment against the use of landmines. HI is a co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and in the UK they run the Ban Cluster Bombs Campaign. You can donate to them at our meetings, or via their website, and at www.higiftshop.org.uk you can buy virtual gifts : clear an area of landmines from £5, buy a demining kit for £35... Martin Shirley has more information, and can give a fund-raising talk to any interested local group.
SWORDS AND PLOUGHSHARES
You will know the phrase, but maybe not the full quotation : “They will beat their swords into ploughshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war any more.
Every man will sit under his own vine
and under his own fig-tree,
and no-one will make them afraid.”
(Micah ch. 4 v. 3 & 4)
